Where to Eat on a Woodinville Wine Tasting Day

Part of our guide to wine tasting in Woodinville.

Somewhere around the third tasting, usually close to 1pm, someone asks where you're eating. It's a better question than it sounds, because the answer depends almost entirely on which part of Woodinville you're standing in. We've already covered which district to pick, three Saturdays we'd run, what you can walk and what the day costs. This is the lunch piece.

The short version: eat in the district you're already tasting in. And a cheese board between pours is a snack, not lunch.

The Simple Version

  • Hollywood has the real restaurants. Book the table.
  • West Valley, three minutes down the same road, is where the pizza, the burgers and the livelier rooms are.
  • Downtown has one kitchen, at Brian Carter, and you never have to move the car.
  • The Warehouse has no lunch. Eat before you park.

Budget $40 to $80 for two if you sit down.

Hollywood: Where Lunch Actually Works

Hollywood is the one district where a proper sit-down lunch fits inside the tasting day instead of interrupting it. There are three good restaurants, and choosing between them mostly comes down to timing.

If you're tasting at DeLille, eat at DeLille. The restaurant is in suite 100, right next to the tasting room in 101. You finish your flight, walk down the hall and sit down to steak frites or pasta, out on the deck when the weather allows. Lunch starts at 11:30 on weekdays and 11 on weekends, and weekend brunch runs until 4. Reservations aren't required, but on a Saturday we'd make one anyway. Two small bonuses: happy hour runs 2:30 to 5 (all day on Thursdays), and if you're in the wine club, your discount carries over to the restaurant. The tasting room sells a cheese board and truffle popcorn from the same kitchen, which is good while you taste but won't carry you to dinner.

Heritage is the easy one. It's a locally owned neighborhood restaurant at the Hollywood Hill roundabout, open from 11 and closed on Mondays. Its real advantage is that the kitchen doesn't close in the afternoon. If your tastings run long and you surface at 3:30 hungry, Heritage will still feed you.

Barking Frog, at Willows Lodge, is the one to book when lunch is the reason you stopped tasting. There's a fireplace, and they'll open bottles you bought that morning for $35 corkage (two per table). Just watch the clock. Weekday lunch ends at 3 and dinner doesn't start until 5, so a late arrival on a Wednesday finds the doors closed. On weekends, brunch runs 7 to 3, and they'll want a reservation.

Two more Hollywood options if those don't fit. Vivi does wood-fired pizza and pasta from 11, with reservations welcome but not required, which makes it the Italian choice for anyone who'd rather not drive. And Maryhill at the Hollywood Schoolhouse has a bistro inside the 1912 schoolhouse. We built lunch around it on the couple's Saturday, and it makes sense when Maryhill is already on your list. If you're picking a restaurant for its own sake, the first three are the stronger calls.

West Valley: Three Minutes Down the Road

A lot of maps label Von's and the Hollywood Tavern as Hollywood, but both sit about three minutes down the road in West Valley. You'll move the car once, and that's the whole detour. This is where to go when the group wants something a little louder than a quiet restaurant lunch.

Von's is the lively one, right next door to Novelty Hill-Januik. Sourdough, pizza, pasta and a real bar, open every day from 11 to 10, with happy hour from 2 to 6. You can walk in, or book on OpenTable if you want the table waiting, and there's valet if the lot is full. It's a real meal rather than a quick bite, so plan on staying a while.

Hollywood Tavern sits a little further up the same road, next to Woodinville Whiskey. It's been a roadside tavern since 1947, with a fire pit outside and a menu built around burgers. Get the Hollywood burger, or the lamb burger if you want something different. Weekday happy hour runs 3 to 6. From Friday through Sunday it's first come, first served, and because the parking lot is shared with the distillery, it fills up fast. Carpool if you can.

Novelty Hill-Januik is the one place where you can have pizza without leaving the tasting room. The catch is that it's weekends only. From Friday through Sunday the kitchen runs an expanded menu that changes every week. The sample menu has a fig jam and bacon pizza and a pepperoni with spiced honey. Monday through Thursday it's cheese and charcuterie only, so don't count on it midweek.

Downtown: Park Once

Downtown is the day you never touch the car. Its tasting rooms cluster around Woodin Creek Village, a couple of minutes apart on foot, so you park, taste, eat and taste again. The kitchen is the bistro at Brian Carter, right next to the tasting room. It's a sit-down table, so book it.

The Warehouse: Plan Around It

Here's what catches people out: nothing in the Warehouse counts as lunch. It's the densest cluster of tasting rooms in Woodinville. The food, though, is usually a cheese board, sometimes a vending machine or a weekend food truck. Efeste has a real kitchen, but it's an eight-minute walk from the rooms on 144th, which is too far to wander over between tastings.

So you have three honest options. Eat before you park. Skip lunch on purpose and eat a big dinner. Or, on a weekend, drive to Italianissimo, knowing you've left the district. It's the Italian option closest to the Warehouse, and lunch runs from 12 on Saturdays and Sundays. On weekdays it doesn't open until 3, which makes it an early dinner rather than a break between tastings. If you won't make that drive, the pasta at Vivi in Hollywood is the fallback.

Worth the Detour

Two places sit outside the tasting districts but earn their own trip.

Curry Leaf is in Woodinville Center, in town rather than next to any winery, so you won't pass it between tastings. It's open from 11, closed on Mondays, and has a full bar. Call ahead if you want a table.

Maltby Cafe, out in Maltby, is the breakfast place, open 7 to 3. Order the cinnamon roll, which is big enough for two. It's about 14 minutes from Hollywood, each way. Go when breakfast is the point of the trip, not as a stop between two Hollywood tastings. Groups larger than six should call first.

In Hollywood, book DeLille, Heritage or Barking Frog. Pick DeLille if you're already tasting in the building, Heritage if you need a kitchen open mid-afternoon, and Barking Frog if lunch is the main event and you'll get there before 3.

Three minutes down the road, it's Von's if the group wants a room with some energy and the tavern if somebody wants a burger. On a weekend, Novelty Hill-Januik has pizza at the winery.

Downtown, it's Brian Carter. Book the table.

In the Warehouse, eat before you arrive, or plan on driving to lunch.
